STORYLINE:
The Cameroon International Music Festival (CIMFEST) concluded on Sunday, wrapping up a week of music and entertainment in Buea, the chief town of the Southwest region of Cameroon.
Cameroon has been experiencing an armed separatist conflict in its English-speaking regions of Northwest and Southwest since 2017, as separatists want to create a new nation.
Against this backdrop, the festival in Buea served as a unifying space for easing tensions and lifting spirits, attracting over 10,000 music lovers daily from across the globe.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): RACHEL ETOGUE, Audience
« The festival is very interesting. It’s very funny. We see things that we’ve never seen, that we’ve never expected. »
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): SILLA DAVIS, Performer
« This festival does not only make us happy — it makes us to unite. It makes me to know you and you to know me. So I am very, very proud of this festival. »
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): PRISMA JAMES, Performer
« I just feel so happy seeing people put aside their difficulties from the political crises, the struggles of the country, the hard times, family issues, and so on. They come together to experience this. It’s beautiful and so consoling. »
SOUNDBITE 4 (English): JOAN NGOMBA, Performer
« I mean, that is amazing. You know, people have been fighting. One way or the other, there has been violence as well. And, sadly, some deaths. With initiatives like this, that gives youth something to smile (about). I think it can contribute positively to the society. »
