STORYLINE:
Afrique54, a Cameroonian media outlet, delivers news and information primarily through its online platform.
With its newsroom servers highly dependent on a stable power supply, frequent outages and voltage fluctuations in Cameroon have posed a major challenge.
To address this, Marcien Essimi, general director of Afrique54, is turning to solar energy.
« In Cameroon, we don’t have local manufacturers of solar energy equipment, so we rely on Chinese platforms like Alibaba and AliExpress for our purchases, » he said in an interview.
He explained that their 24/7 online live broadcasting system is now fully powered by a photovoltaic setup from China.
This system ensures a steady power supply during outages, allowing live TV broadcasts to continue without interruption.
SOUNDBITE (French): MARCIEN ESSIMI, General director of Afrique54
« With a view to improving our company’s equipment, we opted for this solution, using platforms such as AliExpress, Alibaba, where we proceeded to the purchase.
After a few checks, the equipment was shipped to us. Sometimes by air freight, sometimes by sea freight. For several years now, we’ve been equipping our company with more affordable equipment. »
